Bijoy Deka

Bamboo basketry

Dakhinpat, Kamrup, Assam

Their journey

“A basket should outlive the person who ordered it.”

Splits and weaves locally grown bamboo into baskets for storage, farming and the kitchen.

Bijoy harvests bamboo from his own clump in the cool months, when the culms are strongest. He splits the canes with a single knife and weaves on the floor of his courtyard, often alongside neighbours who bring their own work. Most of his designs are the ones his village has used for generations; he adds only handles and sizes that city homes ask for.
