Meet the maker

Arul Velan

Terracotta pottery

“Clay is honest. If you rush it, it cracks and tells everyone.”

Arul (a fictional demo maker) throws lamps in quiet afternoons, hundreds in a day during festival season.

Arul's family has fired pots in the same open kiln for as long as anyone in the village remembers. After a few years working in a city print shop, he came home to modernise the shapes — lighter water pots, stackable lamps — while keeping the clay, the wheel and the slow firing unchanged.

How it is made

Step by step

Clay is dug, soaked, trodden underfoot and wedged by hand. Each lamp is thrown on a stone wheel, cut off with a thread, dried slowly in shade and fired in a wood kiln.

  1. 01

    Preparing clay

River clay is soaked, sieved and trodden to an even texture.

  2. 02

    Throwing

Each lamp is shaped on a spinning stone wheel in under a minute.

  3. 03

    Drying

Lamps dry in shade for three to four days to prevent cracks.

  4. 04

    Firing

An overnight wood firing turns grey clay into red terracotta.
