“A basket should outlive the person who ordered it.”
Bijoy (a fictional demo maker) weaves in his courtyard, often next to neighbours working on their own pieces.
Bijoy harvests bamboo from his own clump in the cool months, when the culms are strongest. He splits the canes with a single knife and weaves on the floor of his courtyard, often alongside neighbours who bring their own work. Most of his designs are the ones his village has used for generations; he adds only handles and sizes that city homes ask for.

How it is made
Step by step
Bamboo is harvested in the cool months, split into strips with a single knife, shaved to even thickness and woven from the base up. The rim is bound with cane.

Mature culms are cut in winter when they are strongest.

Splitting
Culms are split and shaved into thin, even strips.

Weaving
The base is woven flat, then strips are bent upward to form walls.

Binding
A cane-bound rim locks the weave in place.
